Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a modality that has been used effectively in treating veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The therapy uses eye movements in a unique way which processes trauma and reframes the raw, vivid imagery associated with it in the hippocampus. The brain, as a result, “re-files” the painful memory so that individuals can deal with the trauma in a more objective manner.

The project plans for the preservation of the historical character of the museum building while providing for state-of-the-art upgrades. With enhancements like seismic upgrades, both the building and each of the tens of thousands of pieces of art inside will be better protected, notes Kenny Slaught. The project will develop 25 percent more gallery space to make the museum an even more celebrated center of the Santa Barbara community. In all, the renovation project is the most comprehensive the museum has undertaken to date.

In 2011, says Kenny Slaught, Guillermo Bazan, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was one of the winners of the GCE grant. Bazan was recognized for the study of how semiconducting molecules that penetrate the membranes of living organisms may be used to facilitate the conversion of wastewater into energy. This was in line with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s interest in the possibility of using this technology to alleviate sanitation issues in the emerging world, as the issue presents a significant health hazard and negatively impacts people’s dignity.
