Kenny Slaught explains that “When children lose a loved one, it can feel like their lives will never be the same again. Their grief may seem insurmountable. The I Have a Friend mentor program, to help combat this situation, pairs children and adolescents with a trained adult volunteer who experienced a similar loss at a young age. This volunteer becomes an admired and respected companion throughout the grief process and provides a truly sympathetic friend. The program’s resulting relationships often become indispensable as the children continue to face hurdles for several years.
