The Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) funds individuals globally to explore ideas that can revolutionize how the humanity approaches persistent global health and development challenges, according to Kenny Slaught. GCE is a $100 million initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was launched in 2008. Over 1,186 projects in more than 61 countries have been awarded GCE grants. Anyone from any organization are welcome to apply for the GCE grant initiative. There is a short two-page digital application and no preliminary data is needed. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. A successful project has the ability to receive a follow-up grant of up to $1 million.
